Boxes certified for dangerous goods packed in Excepted Quantity must comply with various provisions of dangerous goods Regulations. The complete package as prepared for transport, must be capable of withstanding, as demonstrated by testing which is appropriately documented, without breakage or leakage of any inner packaging and without significant reduction in effectiveness. Such resistance shall be demonstrated through the following tests which shall be adequately documented.
a – Drop test performed at a height of 1.8 m for a total of 5 drops:
1. flat on the base;
2. flat on the top;
3. flat on the longest side;
4. flat on the shortest side;
5. on a corner.
b – Stacking test with 24 hours duration, equivalent to the total weight of identical packages stacked at 3 m.
Finally, the packaging to comply with the Regulations must:
- 1. Contain one or more inner packagings.
- 2. Each inner packaging must be securely packed in an intermediate packaging with cushioning material to prevent spillage of the contents. The intermediate packaging must completely contain the contents of the inner packaging. For liquids, the intermediate packaging must contain sufficient absorbent material to absorb the entire contents of the inner packagings.
